@The Electro-Chemical & Cancer Institute developed a cancer vaccine in 1946, the Hasumi Vaccine, and started its clinical application in 1948. The research originated within a methodological question: "How can we let our body's immune mechanisms distinguish cancer cells from normal cells?" At the time, the late Dr. Kiichiro Hasumi asserted the hypothesis of a cancer virus as the premise of his research, a premise that was totally rejected by the medical circle of Japan at that time.

Since 1988, the present organization has made efforts to extract membrane antigen from cancer cells. In 2000, through joint research with the University of Maryland (USA), the physiological activity of the Hasumi Vaccine was demonstrated and has paved the way for the cancer vaccine to steadily prevail. In 1999, through joint research with the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University (USA), the clinical research of dendritic cell vaccine, a new type of cancer vaccine, was started. Moreover, through joint research with Changchun College of Traditional Chinese Medicine (China) and Saitama Medical College (Japan), Shukokai Incorporated has developed an anti-cancer traditional Chinese medicine. In addition, we are conducting research on the reduction of side effects of anti-cancer pharmaceuticals as well as on the anti-cancer effects of Chinese traditional medicines.

Hasumi Vaccine

The Hasumi Vaccine has been in clinical use since 1948. At first, the concept of this vaccine was based on the simple premise and a methodological question: "How we can let the body's immune system distinguish cancer cells from normal cells?" In those days, the research was based on the theory of virus-induced cancer propagation, an idea totally rejected by the then reigning medical circle of Japan. We have been making efforts to extract membrane antigen from cancer cells since 1988. In the 1990s the evidence that Dendritic cells, a part of white cells, play a major role in recognizing cancer cells' antigen was demonstrated in the US. In 2000, through a joint research project with the University of Maryland (USA), the physiological activity of the Hasumi Vaccine as a cancer vaccine was proven. This enabled the Hasumi Vaccine to be appreciated on an objective basis. Highly motivated by the positive results, clinical investigation of the Hasumi Vaccine has expanded internationally.
